Carbon Fiber Maintenance and Care
Introduction:
Although Carbon Fiber is an expensive and “exotic” material, it’s maintenance doesn’t have to be. With a little know-how and these simple steps, you can keep your investment properly protected and looking like new.
General Precautions:
Be careful not to nick or deeply scratch the clear coat on the Carbon Fiber. This can lead to water intrusion which will damage the finish and the integrity of the Carbon Fiber.
The clear coat also protects the structure from dust, dirt, and damaging UV rays.
If a nick or deep scratch does occur, seal the damaged area thoroughly with a clear coat touch up or clear nail polish.
Washing:
Carbon Fiber can be washed with any gentle cleanser or soap. If it is safe for the paint on your car, it will be safe for the Carbon Fiber.
In between washing, use a spray on detailer such as Nano Bond Ceramic detailer which is our go-to sealant.
Dry with a soft microfiber towel to avoid scratches and swirl marks.
Polishing:
If needed, the surface can be polished by hand or with a buffing tool, to remove small scratches or haziness from oxidation. With anything outside oxidation can occur from UV-rays, however this can be easily corrected.
First wash the carbon fiber part and make sure it is free of any containments or wax/grease. Then grab any fine automotive polish, be sure to choose one that isn't too aggressive to start with. A light polish should be enough to remove some slight oxidation. If needed move to a more aggressive polishing compound.
Sealing:
To retain the UV resistance and protect the finish from the elements, apply a high-quality carnauba wax or spray detailer after cleaning. If you want to go the extra mile and provide your carbon fiber parts with the ultimate protection then use a good ceramic coating. Carbon fiber parts can indeed be ceramic coated providing a beautiful deep glossy shine and unbeatable protection. We like to use this Nano Bond Pro ceramic coating Kit.
Ceramic Coating such as this kit from Nano Bond essentially forms a second clear coat on the surface it is applied too. Not only does it provide a great shine but it also creates a super hydrophobic surface that repels water and is resistant to water spots. This makes ceramic coating ideal for carbon fiber parts.
